Wallsend heritage

Our
history.

From the women who helped pioneer the game in Wallsend to the modern first-team pathway carrying that spirit forward.

Two chapters, one town

A proud women’s-football tradition

Women’s football in Wallsend has roots stretching back to the early 1970s. The historical Wallsend Ladies side and today’s Wallsend BC women’s section are distinct chapters; the available public record does not yet establish an unbroken organisational line between them.

What connects them is the place, the people and a determination to create opportunities for women to play, coach and represent their community. We will continue expanding this record as former players, staff and supporters contribute photographs and memories.

International recognition

The single star honours players from the Wallsend Women’s section who have progressed to make a senior international debut. It is one lasting symbol of collective achievement—not a running total—and represents the pathway, standards and ambition of everyone connected with the section.

Wallsend Ladies formed

A Wallsend women’s side was formed under manager Vera Eland and became one of the region’s leading teams. This is an important earlier chapter in the town’s women’s-football heritage.

League and cup success

With too few opponents in the North East, Wallsend Ladies travelled to play in a Hull-based league—and won both its league title and cup.

Coaching pioneers

Wallsend players Christine Hutchinson and Bernadette Tutte became the first women in the country to receive the FA Preliminary coaching certificate.

A Wallsend player represents England

Christine Hutchinson, a prolific forward and long-serving Wallsend captain, made her England debut against Switzerland and went on to appear for her country ten times.

The modern senior section

Wallsend Boys Club launched its modern senior women’s team after bringing championship-winning Rutherford Ravens into the club as Wallsend BC Ladies.

Premier Division football

FA Full-Time records Wallsend BC Ladies competing in the North East Regional Women’s Football League Premier Division.

Reserves crowned champions

Wallsend Boys Club Women Reserves won the North East Regional Women’s Football League Division One North title.

FA Cup progress

The first team recorded a 5–0 win over Wigginton Grasshoppers and later reached the second round proper of the Women’s FA Cup.

Two Gibraltar call-ups

Wallsend players Mara Todoran and Esme Cerisola were selected for Gibraltar’s senior women’s national squad for the March international window and the country’s first FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying campaign. Mara, already a Gibraltar international, featured against Kosovo; Esme earned her first senior call-up at just 16.
